This is a deciduous shrub, endemic to Japan, belonging to the honeysuckle family. It produces small, pink or white, trumpet-shaped flowers in early spring and sweet red berries in summer. It is also known as Uguisunoki, with theories suggesting its name comes from the fact that its flowers bloom around the time the Japanese bush warbler sings, or that it's a good tree for bush warblers to hide in. It grows wild from Hokkaido to Kyushu and is also used as a garden tree.
