Mikawachi ware, a specialty of Sasebo, is a designated Traditional Craft of Japan. Its porcelain, which possesses a translucent beauty, is imbued with techniques passed down for over 400 years.
The origins of Mikawachi ware are widely believed to stem from Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea around 1592 (Tensho 20) and 1597 (Keicho 2). According to one theory, Lord Shigenobu Matsuura of the Hirado domain, who governed the Sasebo City area at the time, brought back about 100 Korean potters, including Koseki, and established kilns. Initially, pottery was primarily produced in Japan, but around 1640 (Kan'ei 17), the discovery of white porcelain ore by Koseki's son, Sannojō Imamura, gradually led to its transformation into the white porcelain seen today.
By around 1650 (Keian 3), the system of official kilns was established, and the Hirado domain actively protected Mikawachi ware. It began to be presented as tribute to the Edo Shogunate and, by the late 17th century, was exported overseas to China and Europe, gaining attention both domestically and internationally.
While Mikawachi ware was distinct from the lives of common people, it became widely loved and accessible to them after the Meiji period.
