It also features gold leaf, and the maki-e depicts two butterflies in flight.
Unlike simple painted designs, maki-e has a raised, three-dimensional effect due to the thickness of the lacquer.
It has been used for tea ceremonies and other occasions.
It is in beautiful condition.
The item comes in a wooden box, though not a paulownia wood box.
