Sumidagawa Kogo (Incense Container) with Boat Design, includes original box
Sumidagawa Ware Boat Motif Incense Container
This blue-and-white incense container is believed to be from the Meiji period. It has a small, square shape with a handle, and is characterized by its design of a boat on a river. The style is reminiscent of Sumidagawa ware. Comes with its original wooden box.
The box lid has a handwritten inscription that appears to read Sometsuke Kogo Kakutagawa? (Blue-and-white incense container, Kakutagawa?).
The underside of the box has a cursive ink inscription that may be a signature, possibly Hidari? (Left?). A red tag states Sometsuke Sumidagawa (Blue-and-white, Sumidagawa).
*Note: Sumidagawa was sometimes written as Kakutagawa until around the early Meiji period.
We have not definitively confirmed this, so please understand that this is not a guaranteed attribution. This is an atmospheric incense container suitable for tea ceremony or as a collectible.
There are minor stains due to age and some unglazed clay texture on the bottom from the firing process, giving it an antique feel. No noticeable chips or cracks were found. The box has age-related yellowing and scuff marks. Please check the images for details.
