Artist Introduction
Wang Kwei
Born in 1950 in Beijing. Oil painter, Lianhuanhua painter, member of the China Artists Association. Specially appointed researcher at the Calligraphy and Painting Academy of the PLA National Defense University. Formerly an art editor in the Lianhuanhua Bao editorial department of People's Fine Arts Publishing House and an art creator in the Training Department of the National Defense University, he later taught as a drawing instructor at the Xu Beihong Art College of Renmin University of China.
Passionate about painting from a young age, he was influenced by his father, who painted oil portraits of Chairman Mao Zedong and national leaders at important sites in the capital such as Tiananmen Square, fostering his love for art and building a solid foundation. Under the guidance of renowned masters of the older generation of oil painters such as Su Gaoli, Dai Ze, Li Jun, Wang Chong, and Qian Shaowu, he deeply studied Western art history and creative theory.
During his period of rustication in the rural areas of Shanxi Province, he created many sketches for the farmers in the fields. He produced a large number of landscape sketches of village dwellings, plateaus, canyons, and the Yellow River. He also created numerous illustrations, Lianhuanhua, and propaganda posters in the army, which were published in army and local newspapers and magazines. His experiences in difficult living conditions played an important role in shaping his outlook on life and art.
He pioneered the frame-by-frame drawing method for Lianhuanhua in China and became a pioneer of Lianhuanhua with modern military themes. He created many Lianhuanhua in the 1970s and 1980s, with representative works including:
The Pearl Harbor Incident, The Battle of Leyte Gulf, I Bombed Hiroshima, The Battle of Guadalcanal, Kagemusha, Don Quixote, and others.
In the 1990s, inspired by the 5,000-year history of China, he used passion as the driving force for his creations and produced many oil paintings based on Chinese history. Representative works include: Binge Xing, Polo Players, Guo Shang, Resonance of Horns, The General's Hunt, Wu Sheng Guan Gong, Emperor of the Great Tang Receives Foreign Envoys, Three Heroes Fight Lu Bu, Fire Bull Formation, Wang Zhaojun Goes Beyond the Great Wall, and others. These works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, auctions, and publications, and are collected by individuals and institutions both domestically and internationally.
Artist's Thoughts
The realist art education deeply influenced my exploration of artistic forms and the formation of my personal style. I emphasize sketching, and even in the modern era of advanced imaging technology, I capture the real sense of life with my heart and hands from real life. Then, I sublimate it into form, pouring passion into each color and brushstroke, imbuing it with beauty and vitality, and pursuing works that are truly lifelike.
